Matt Montaño is the superintendent of Bernalillo Public Schools, where he leads transformational initiatives focused on equity, student achievement, and college, career, and military readiness for all students. With three decades of experience in education, Matt has held leadership roles at the state and district levels, including Deputy Commissioner at the Texas Education Agency and Deputy Cabinet Secretary at the New Mexico Public Education Department. His work has impacted millions of students through strategic reforms in special education, bilingual education, educator quality, and instructional systems. A proud product and lifelong advocate of New Mexico’s communities, Matt began his career as a special education teacher and school administrator in Bernalillo, where he remains deeply committed to serving students and families. His leadership is recognized nationally for its focus on innovation, equity, and culturally responsive practices.
