Chiefs for Change Joins 92 Organizations Opposing Legislation to Fragment the U.S. Department of Education

Chiefs for Change joined 92 education, civil rights, and disability organizations in opposing a package of bills before the House Committee on Education and Workforce that would authorize the transfer of significant responsibilities from the U.S. Department of Education to other federal agencies.

The joint statement urges Congress to reject the package and instead exercise its oversight authority over the administration’s use of interagency agreements. It highlights concerns that dispersing federal education responsibilities across multiple agencies will create confusion, duplicate administrative processes, increase burden for states and districts, and disrupt the delivery of critical services to students and families.

Chiefs for Change signed the statement because our members rely on clear lines of accountability, stable federal systems, and deep expertise in education to implement federal programs effectively. Any major change to the administration of those programs should strengthen service delivery, reduce burden, and protect continuity for students.
